Garbage Disposal Repair and Replacement

Most garbage disposal repair calls usually begin with one of three sounds: a hum that goes nowhere, a grinding rattle, or silence. Each points to a different problem, and most are quick to sort out. Here is how to tell them apart, what is safe to try yourself, and when it makes more sense to replace the unit. M3 Home Repair and Remodeling handles disposal repair and replacement as part of our home repair services.

Safety First: Power Off Before You Look

Never put your hand into a disposal, even when it seems to be off. Switch off the wall switch, then unplug the unit from the outlet under the sink or turn off its breaker. A disposal that is only “off” at the switch can start if someone flips it. Use tongs or pliers to remove anything you can see, never fingers.

What the Symptom Tells You

  • It hums but the blades do not turn. The impeller is jammed, usually by a bone, a fruit pit, a utensil or a stuck piece of food. The motor is trying to turn and cannot.
  • It does nothing at all, no hum. The unit has tripped its overload protector, has lost power, or the motor has failed.
  • It runs but with a metallic grinding or rattling noise. Something hard is loose in the chamber, or a bearing is wearing out.
  • It drains slowly or backs up into the sink. The clog is often in the drain line past the garbage disposal, not the disposal itself.
  • Water is leaking from below. The leak source determines whether this is a quick fix or a replacement garbage disposal is necessary.

Clearing a Jam

Sometimes a garbage disposal repair can be completed by the home owner. With the power off, look for a small hex socket in the center of the underside of most disposals. Inserting the matching hex wrench (usually supplied with the unit, often a quarter inch) and turning it back and forth frees the blades. If your unit has no socket, a wooden spoon handle or broom handle pressed into the chamber from above and rocked against a blade can free it. Once it turns freely, run cold water, restore power and press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit. A tripped reset is the usual reason a disposal is silent.

Where Leaks Come From

Dry the underside and run water to find the exact spot:

  • At the top, where the sink meets the unit. The flange seal or putty has failed. This is repairable by resealing the sink flange.
  • At the pipes on the side. The dishwasher hose or discharge pipe connection has loosened, or a gasket has failed. Tightening or replacing the gasket often fixes it.
  • From the body of the disposal itself, or from the bottom. The housing has corroded or the internal seal has failed. This is the sign to replace the unit, since there is no practical repair.

The call came through on a Tuesday evening from a young family here in Kennesaw. Their garbage disposal had started humming without turning, and the cabinet below the sink had been damp for weeks. With the power off I freed it first through the hex socket on the underside; a fruit pit had wedged the impeller, and once it turned freely by hand, running cold water and pressing the reset button brought the motor back to life. That part was twenty minutes of work.

Then I dried out the cabinet and ran water to find what was leaking, because their damp pad meant more than splashing. The rust streaks came off the body itself at the drain connection on the bottom: that housing had corroded through after about thirteen years, which is past a unit’s normal life. A flange seal leak can be repaired; this one cannot.

We took it down, cleaned and resealed the sink flange, hung the new half horsepower unit on its mounting ring, removed the plastic knockout at the dishwasher inlet so their dishwasher would drain through it, plugged it into the outlet under the sink, and ran a full leak test with water going for ten minutes before I left.

Garbage Disposal Repair or Replace?

Disposals commonly last about a decade, depending on use and water quality. As a rule of thumb, garbage disposal repair only makes sense for jams, reset problems, a loose connection or a leaking flange. Replacement makes sense when:

  • The garbage disposal housing leaks, or you see rust streaks.
  • The motor hums or trips repeatedly even after the jam is cleared.
  • The unit is more than about ten years old and has already needed a repair.
  • It is too weak for the household, in which case a larger motor or a continuous-feed model with better sound insulation is a worthwhile upgrade.

What Goes Into a Replacement

Garbage disposal repair is not always possible, and a replacement means more than swapping a box. The old unit is released from its mounting ring, the sink flange is cleaned and resealed, and the new unit is hung and connected to the drain trap. Two details trip people up: if a dishwasher drains through the disposal, the plastic knockout plug inside the dishwasher inlet has to be removed, otherwise the dishwasher cannot drain; and the electrical connection must match, either a plug-in cord to an outlet or a hardwired connection. We handle both and test for leaks before we leave.

When a Plumber or Electrician Should Do It

Some jobs belong with a licensed Plumber or Electrician, and we will say so plainly: moving or adding drain lines, adding a new outlet or circuit under the sink, or any wiring that needs a new run in the wall. We would rather point you to the right professional than do work that should be permitted and inspected.

Keeping a Disposal Healthy

  • Run a strong stream of cold water before, during and for about fifteen seconds after use.
  • Feed it small amounts at a time rather than a heap.
  • Avoid grease and oil, coffee grounds in large quantity, pasta and rice (they swell), potato peels in bulk, and anything fibrous such as celery or corn husks.
  • Never put bones, fruit pits, glass, metal or non-food items down it.
  • Grind ice cubes or a little citrus peel occasionally to clean and freshen the chamber.
