Bathroom Remodeling

A bathroom remodel is many small jobs inside one small room: demolition, plumbing, electrical, waterproofing, tile, fixtures and finish carpentry, all in a space your household uses every day. M3 Home Repair and Remodeling, led by Jim Mitchell in Kennesaw, Georgia, remodels bathrooms for homeowners near Kennesaw, from a refresh of a dated hall bath to a full gut of a primary bath.

What a Bathroom Remodel Includes

Every bathroom is different, so the scope is set during the walkthrough. Typical work includes:

Full bathroom remodeling, from demolition to the final coat of paint

Tile work and grouting on floors, walls and shower surrounds

Custom shower and tub installation, including conversions from tub to walk-in shower

Vanities, storage and countertops

Toilets, faucets, showerheads and other fixtures

Lighting, exhaust fans and outlets

Flooring and trim

Accessibility changes such as grab-bar blocking, curbless showers and wider clearances

How the Work Goes

  1. Walkthrough and estimate. Jim looks at the room, checks what you want to keep and what you want changed, and talks through the options before anything is decided.
  2. Plan and selections. Tile, vanity, fixtures and glass are chosen early because their lead times often set the schedule.
  3. Protection and demolition. Floors and the path through the house are covered, then the old fixtures, tile and damaged material come out.
  4. Rough-in. With the walls open, plumbing and electrical changes are made and any hidden damage is dealt with before it is covered up.
  5. Waterproofing. Shower areas get a proper waterproofing system and a flood test where the design calls for one. This step decides how long a bathroom lasts in Georgia humidity.
  6. Tile and surfaces. Backer board, tile, grout and sealing, then paint and trim.
  7. Fixtures and finish. Vanity, toilet, faucets, lighting and hardware go in and everything is tested.
  8. Final walk-through and cleanup. We go through the finished room with you and leave it ready to use.

What Shapes the Scope and the Schedule

Timelines differ from one bathroom to the next, and the honest answer to “how long?” starts with these questions:

  • Layout changes. Keeping the toilet, tub and vanity where they are is a simpler job than moving drains and supply lines.
  • What is behind the walls. Old pipes, soft subfloor or past water damage are only found once the room is opened.
  • Selections and lead times. Custom glass, special-order tile and vanities can take longer to arrive than the work takes to do.
  • Shower type. A tiled walk-in shower involves more steps than a prefabricated insert.
  • Permits and inspections. Whether your work needs a permit depends on your city or county and on what is being changed.
  • Whether it is your only bathroom. If so, we plan the work to keep the disruption as short as we can.

Plumbing and Electrical Work

M3 coordinates the whole remodel. Where plumbing or electrical work in a bathroom needs a licensed plumber or licensed electrician, such as moving drains, adding circuits or upgrading a panel, that part goes to a licensed professional and M3 schedules the rest of the job around it. If you are not sure which category a change falls into, ask during the estimate.

What a Typical Remodel Looks Like

This is a typical scenario, not a description of one customer’s job. A homeowner has a hall bathroom with a worn tub, cracked grout and a vanity that no longer fits the room. The first visit settles what stays and what goes. The tub-and-tile surround and vanity are replaced, the walls are opened to check for moisture damage, the shower area is waterproofed, new tile is set, and the fixtures and lighting are updated. The household usually keeps a second bathroom available while this one is out of service, which makes the schedule easier to live with.

Bathroom Remodeling FAQs

How long does a bathroom remodel take?

It depends on the size, the layout and the materials, and we will not guess before seeing the room. At the estimate we walk through the steps above and give you a realistic schedule for your bathroom.

Can I use the bathroom during the remodel?

Not while it is being demolished and rebuilt. If it is the only bathroom in the house, tell us at the walkthrough so we can plan around it.

Will you help with tile and fixture choices?

Yes. Choosing early keeps the schedule predictable, and we can tell you what works well in a wet room and what does not.

Do I need a permit for a bathroom remodel?

It depends on your city or county and on the work involved. Changes to plumbing, wiring or structure are the ones most likely to need one. Your local building department has the final word, and we can talk through what applies at your address.

I've been working with Jim and M3 for the last 2 years. M3 has done practically everything including roof repair, plumbing, electrical, appliance installation, drywall installation, and water insulation. Jim also rebuilt my deck from Scratch and performed countless other jobs around my rental property. He's also a fantastic consultant when it comes to other contractors outside of his areas of expertise. I own a few rental properties in Home Park, Atlanta that need quite a bit of upkeep and I have genuinely never met a better contractor.
I had a great experience working with Jim and his team at M3. They repaired exterior roof and interior drywall damage from a storm and the work was excellent. Later Jim and Aiden repaired ceiling drywall from a leak and didn’t stop until it was perfect. I really appreciated the responsiveness, upfront pricing and quotes, and professional attitude of his whole team. I’ll definitely use M3 again. Positives: Responsiveness, Quality, Professionalism, Value Services: Roof repair, Home maintenance & repairs, General repairs, Drywall installation, Drywall repair
Jim was great to communicate with in getting one of his team out to replace the lock on our front door. Aiden came and replaced it, he was on time and easy to work with. And then, when we realized that the new lock was making our door an Olympic sport level of effort to close, Jim had Aiden come back out to fix it quickly. Highly recommend for quality and a pleasant communication experience. Thanks guys! Positives: Responsiveness, Quality. Services: Home maintenance & repairs.
